Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome has invited BSA to be guest speaker at the launch the new website that will promote activities of the Music Up Close Network partners. The press conference was held on 2 March 2017 in Accademia’s Auditorium. BSA has emphasised the importance of such projects and the responsibility that each of the partners have towards young emerging artists, new audiences and especially the Balkan region that could benefit remarkably from the Network and its activities. BSA finished last season with great and thrilling success. For the first time, we had a chance to play with much respected world acclaimed musicians of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam. Not only we have had a chance to work intensely and very close in sectional rehearsals with them, we have also spent more time than planned on stage in general rehearsal with maestro Daniele Gatti who has given us the insight of his musical language and relationship with the musicians of the Concertgebouw. We have been a part of this alive and unpredictable process that has allowed us to show the very best of our orchestra and to convince maestro Gatti that we are capable of the professional and highly interesting music making. Sharing of the emotions, energy and music has turned the day of the mutual concert into the experience of a lifetime.
Meet the legend was the most intriguing title that BSA introduced in the last season. With presence of Mr Ivry Gitlis, a virtuoso violinist, genius and generous partner in music sharing, we have got answers to many questions about music, how to bring it to life, about colour in music, articulation and many different styles in music. We could experience what is excitement in music with his still powerful playing, talking and also – singing. There are many different ways how to approach to different music gems and he made it clear – what is valuable is your decision about it, your passion and your capacity of playing it sincerely. Among the milestones of celebrated composers who have enriched the development of music over the years and centuries are certainly Mozart’s Symphony No. 38, known as Prague Symphony, and Beethoven’s famous Symphony no. 5. The challenge, inventiveness, knowledge of modelling and combinatorics of musical material are amazing with both composers still today. In his Prague Symphony Mozart finally and decisively transformed the entertainment and the social aspect of the song in the symphony as we know it today. Beethoven’s fatal motif on the other hand marked the music from all periods, genres, and dimensions and thus made himself and the symphony immortal, unforgettable and always relevant. Along with both symphonies the Violin concerto No. 1 by Sergei Prokofiev is also a composition that has been written in the composer’s strongest period around the revolutionary year 1917. The evening promises a lot of inspiration and at the same time an exceptional task for the conductor Domingo Hindoyan and soloist Michael Barenboim. Both come from extremely productive musical backgrounds and bring with them the wisdom of the great musicians, such as Abbado, Barenboim senior, Mehta and plenty of experience from their previously successful music careers.
Born in Caracas, Venezuela, he began his music studies as a violinist and a member of the renowned Venezuelan musical education program El Sistema. Hindoyan obtained a master’s degree in conducting at the Haute Ecole de Musique de Genève with the highest distinction with prof. Laurent Gay and thereafter participated in several master classes with Bernard Haitink, David Zinman and Jesus Lopez Cobos. Domingo Hindoyan was a successful laureate at the Cadaqués and Malko conducting competitions, as well as at the Jesus Lopez Cobos Opera conductor competition in Madrid. He has also worked as assistant to Claudio Abbado for concerts with the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra in Lucerne and Caracas. Thanks to his Syrian-Armenian descent, Domingo has also been a standing member of the West Eastern Divan Orchestra as a violinist since 2006.
He has conducted, among others, the London Philharmonic, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the Philharmonia Orchestra, Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège, Sinfonieorchester Basel, Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, Orquesta de Valencia and Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra. Domingo Hindoyan also maintains close ties with his native Venezuela where he is a regular guest conductor within El Sistema.
In 2012 Hindoyan was selected by the highly prestigious Allianz International Conductors Academy to work with the London Philharmonic and the Philharmonia Orchestra under the guidance of world-renowned conductors such as Esa-Pekka Salonen, Sir Andrew Davis and John Carewe. Following his participation in the Academy, Hindoyan was invited to conduct the Philharmonia Orchestra in July 2012, which led to an immediate re-invitation.
Hindoyan is also increasingly gaining recognition as an opera conductor. In early 2012, he conducted 10 performances of l’Elisir d’Amore at the Bregenz Landestheater. During the current season 2012/13, Domingo Hindoyan is a regular guest conductor at the Graz Oper, where he conducts a revival of La Traviata and a new production of Hänsel & Gretel, as well as a ballet evening with Stravinky’s “Sacre du printemps” and Ravel’s “Daphnis et Chloé”.
Other engagements during the 2012/13 season include Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Orquesta Ciudad de Granada, Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken, the Philharmonia London and Sinfonieorchester Basel. He will make his debut in Japan during the 2013/14 season with the New Japan Philharmonic.
Domingo Hindoyan has been appointed as the first assistant to Daniel Barenboim at the Staatsoper Berlin starting from 2013.
He is one of the most versatile and talented artists of his generation. Concertmaster of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra since 2003, in his young career as a soloist he has already played with some of the world’s most prestigious orchestras and conductors, and appears regularly at concert halls including Berlin’s Philharmonie, the Musikverein in Vienna and London’s Royal Albert Hall. In 2011 he performed Schoenberg’s Violin Concerto with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra under Pierre Boulez at Cologne’s Philharmonie and made his debut with the Wiener Philharmoniker in May 2012.
Highlights of the 2012/13 season included a very successful debut with Chicago Symphony, as well as performances with the Münchner Philharmoniker under Lorin Maazel on tour throughout Europe and with the Gulbenkian Orchestra under David Zinman. Other debuts included performances with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orquesta del Palau de les Arts – both under Zubin Mehta – and with NDR Sinfonieorchester under Michael Gielen. In summer 2013 he appeared at the Granada Festival with Orquestra Filarmonica della Scala de Milán under the baton of Christoph Eschenbach. He also gave performances at the Lucerne and La Roque d’Antheron festivals and made his recital debut at the Festival de Radio France et Montpellier.
2013/14 sees Barenboim give performances with SWR Sinfonieorchester Freiburg und Baden-Baden under Michael Gielen, Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra and Orquesta de Valencia with Yaron Traub. He will also tour Germany with the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, performing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto under Karl Heinz Steffens. He will also make two appearances at Salzburg’s Mozarteum including at the Dialoge Festival in autumn 2013. Further ahead, Barenboim will make debut appearances with Basel Sinfonieorchester under Dennis Russell Davies and with Tokyo Symphony Orchestra and Santtu-Matias Rouvali. He will also participate in concerts in Berlin and Paris as part of Pierre Boulez’s 90th birthday celebrations.
A devoted chamber musician, Michael Barenboim has worked with artists such as Denis Kozhukhin, Guy Braunstein, Frans Helmerson, Nobuko Imai, Daniel Barenboim, Karl-Heinz Steffens and Nikolaj Znaider. Barenboim founded the Erlenbusch Quartet and is their first violinist.
LJUBLJANA INTERNATIONAL ORCHESTRA
The LIO is increasingly gaining recognition among young musicians and professionals, leading artists across the globe. It continues to perform successfully in Slovenia, Italy, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, United Kingdom and Spain.
The LIO is part of the Branimir Slokar Academy, an organisation that supports the orchestra’s long term development, focusing to create an international orchestra of outstanding young musicians and providing them with the invaluable experience of playing in a symphonic orchestra and working with distinguished professors, conductors and soloists.
The orchestra maintains its own network of musicians that are selected in auditions and invited due to the characteristics of the programmes. Musicians from approximately 35 different countries, hence different cultures and social environments, strive to achieve the highest performance level. Another objective is to provide talented individuals with the most appropriate music education, aiming for the highest standards in music and promoting young generations of musicians. Furthermore, the orchestra enables international mobility of musicians in Europe and uses the power of music to encourage international dialogue.
The orchestra’s repertoire consists of symphonic works of the Viennese Classical and Romantic periods as well as 20th century music. Sincere enthusiasm, youthful energy and reckless courage are essential in reaching towards the great masterpieces of symphonic repertoire that are studied yearly during several working phases.
The conductors who have played the significant role in the development of the orchestra are Klaus Arp (Germany) and Živa Ploj Peršuh (Slovenia). Other important collaborations include soloists such as violist Wolfram Christ, trombonist Branimir Slokar, trumpeter Reinhold Friedrich, cellist Konstantin Pfiz, violinist Gregory Ahss, violist Gilad Karni. The concertmasters of the orchestra are Gregory Ahss (concertmaster of Camerata Salzburg and Luzern Festival Orchestra), Janez Podlesek (concertmaster of Slovenian Philharmonic) and Yuri Kalnits (soloist). Permanent other musicians in the orchestra are also Konstantin Pfiz (cello), Knut-Erik Sundquist (double bass), Jože Kotar (clarinet), Igor Ahss (bassoon), Zora Slokar (french horn), Mihael Šuler (trombone) and Raymond Curfs (timpani).
The Ljubljana International Orchestra is cultural ambassador of the City of Ljubljana. It represents the beautiful Slovenian capital and aims to portray Ljubljana as a cosmopolitan city, a city of youth, creativity and opportunities.
